Nick Cooper (BathNick): 7th July 2008
Hi Peter & Co., Many, many thanks for a couple of wonderful evenings in Kingsand. I shall endeavour to be there next year; in the meantime I await the release of the Gigspanner album. Thanks again. Cheers NickC

Paul Jenkins: 28th June 2008
Hi Peter,
Following on from the previous message I too wish to thank you and Steeleye Span for the joy that you brought and continue to bring to my late wife and I. My wife Bonni was a big fan of your playing and particularly enjoyed "Let Her Go Down". She had hoped to pass on her thanks in person one day but she tragically died in her sleep on 15/04/07. Steeleye's music has continued to play a big part in my life as I continue to rebuild my world. I was pleased to be in the front row at your recent gig at The Colston Hall in Bristol and it was the best I've seen the band play (even when Rick forgot the words to Cold Haily Windy Night). Musically it began a great month of brilliant gigs which also took in Jethro Tull. I can't wait to see Steeleye on tour again and once I've passed my driving test hopefully I will be able to take in some Gigspanner gigs as well. Keep going because I appreciate what both you and Steeleye Span do.

Jeannine Bestine: 4th June 2008
Dear Peter Knight,
I wanted to thank you for the "A Song Will Remain". My husband and I used it at our wedding in 1996, and I used it again at his funeral mass. The song encapsulated everything that was our love. I have so many happy and wonderful memories of him, and I miss him dearly. Your song has helped me as I try to come to terms with this horrible nightmare. Feel free to get to know my love by visiting his web page at
www.ravelgrane.com

with love,

Jeannine Bestine (yes, I kept my maiden name)

Jane Watson: 19th May 2008
When you were in Colchester you finished with a song called 'The song remains'.Is this recorded anywhere? It was so beautiful I wouldlike a copy.

Vaughan: 6th May 2008
Tremendous gig at preston last night, thanks

Graeme Barber: 3rd March 2008
Not sure if its happened before but Steeleye were one of the specialist subjects on Mastermind. The contestant, naturally given his good taste, won the round with an impressive 17 points!

phil allitt mid wales: 18th January 2008
just to note that aberystwyth have reconsidered and replaced the tables and chairs idea with fixed seating for the opening night of steeleye's spring tour! that's good then...

Hugh Evans: 3rd January 2008
I had a dream last night in which I was performing in a concert with Bob Johnson, Tim Harries, Liam Genocky and your good self. I don't actually remember any of the concert itself (as my dream sort of "skipped" that bit), although I do remember being shown some recorded footage of the performance, and I also remember a Daily Telegraph critic saying I was "the worst thing to happen that day" .

It would be great if that performance could really happen :D.

Rob Cope: 28th December 2007
Hi Peter,

Looking forward to the 2008 SS dates. Am on the front row in Buxton. Yippeee. Any chance of more live material from one of my favourite SS albums "Time" ? Would love to hear "Harvest of the Moon", "You Will Burn", "Old Maid In The Garrett", "Water Is Wide" or any of the tracks really. "The Song Will Remain" was a nice surprise on the last tour. Keep up the good work.

Phil Allitt/ Mid Wales Coast: 27th December 2007
Hi Peter. We always have a little chat after whatever gig I manage to get to! Aberystwyth likely to be the next! To warn you: they are apparently putting tables and chairs out for the gig which is-- different I suppose!

Do Steeleye ever do requests? In the 34 years Ive seen you in concert,I have NEVER heard you perform "Lovely on the Water" so there's a thought! Good wishes for a very happy New Year.

Roland Schirmer: 25th December 2007
Merry Christmas to you, Peter and to all of the members (past and present)of my favourite band since the last thirty (or more) years: "Steeleye Span". Thank you for the music and keep on doing this for many`s a year

Hugh Evans: 5th December 2007
Any chance of Steeleye returning to Dorking next year? Saw you in 2006 - a brilliant show! Even though (at 16 or 17) I was probably the youngest person there! Anyway, do come to Surrey please. It would be good to see you again. Best wishes, Hugh.

Satyapala (aka Mike Howes): 5th November 2007
Just thought I'd say hello. I met you when I was about 19 (circa 1966) when you were working at Boosey & Hawkes. I remember you helped me 'acquire' my first guitar from B & H. I have followed your career with interest although I have never seen you live. For 20 odd years I have been a Buddhist meditation teacher.

Best wishes and good luck

Keith Hartley: 3rd November 2007
Hi everybody. I just thought I should remind everyone about Gay Wood`s site. I just posted on her guestbook. Nice book. Good luck for now.

Mike B: 25th October 2007
Really enjoyed the site. The quality of the band's sound was improved by your fantastic playing ( violin sound and Maddy's voice perfect complimentary sounds ) Love Let Her Go Down, Seagulls - couple of my favourites. Have followed Steeleye since the early 70s - have got all the albums, seen lots of the tours ( on beaches, in barns, leisure centres, town halls etc ) all fantastic evenings.Long may they continue.

Steve Metzler: 22nd July 2007
Great fun at Norden Farm tonight, a real pleasure to hear (and see) you again. Still amazed at the sounds you can elict from the violin....keep it up.

Chris Richards: Chairman, Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir: 17th July 2007
Thrilled to have been able to attend Gigspanners concert at Kingsand in June. The village is still talking about the gig, and the hall is still echoing to the sound of dancing in the aisles!! A completly amazing evening.

Thanks also for sharing the "afterglow" with us following the joint Rame/Polperro quayside concert at Polperro. The village `as never `ad a Knight like it!! Cheers!!

steve from oz: 27th may 2007

Jonathan Taylor: 25th may 2007
Hi Peter - Thank you for adding me on your MySpace freinds list, I'm very touched. Hope USA was fantastic - I hear so? I've just bought Bloody Men! Shamefully leaving it this late I admit - amazing and love it, quite exceptional as ever. Maddy was in Heptonstall last night (6 miles away)and I missed it - the useless man I am. My Fond regards, Jonathan.

Jim Coogler: 23rd may 2007
Just found this site. Marvelous band. Good to see you are all still around and playing.

A small correction for Barry Curtis' review of Bloody Men on Michael Newberry's site: "Cold Haily Windy Night" hails from Please to See the King, not Ten Man Mop.

Chas: 21st may 2007
Hi Peter.

Just like to wish you a happy 60th Birthday for next Monday 27th May (if I have got the date right!)

Cheers

Little Sir Bazza: 14th April 2007
There is yet another review of Bloody Men, this time on Michael Newbery's website. See http://users.actrix.co.nz/newbery/Steeleye-Span/Reviews/BloodyMen.html

John: 8th March 2007
I too have really been enjoying the new album. Hopefully there'll be another one before the end of the year - how about Winter 2?

On another topic, has there been any movement on possibly releasing Steeleye's BBC-2 series on DVD? I know that the Beeb are shortly to be releasing DVDs of other artiste's TV appearances (Dusty Springfield is one), and to have the Steeleye ones would be a dream come true.

Bruce Davies: 1st March 2007
Hi Peter,

Greetings from Bruce of JAM studios!

Monica Andrews: 25th February 2007
It took me a while to work out how to get to this page. Its like the davinci code. I am a big fan of Steeleye. My dad got me into the band. He has 4 or 5 albums. My mum is a fan of fairport and they argue in the house about the bands. I love them both. I have not ever been to a concert but my dad - Frank snr says hell take me this year.

Best wishes Monica

Joe Ward: 12th February 2007
I love the new Steeleye album, Peter.

Nice album cover, too. I`m reminded somewhat of the cover of Queen`s "The Miracle" album.

Paddy Kniveton: 12th February 2007
Hello all. I’m gagging for another gig after being at Broadstairs last year. I was a steward. Looking forward to 2007 fest.

Currently I’m listening to “As if..” from my fav band “Guilty as Hell” off the soon to be released “All over the place”. Great Alt lyrics.

Denis Stratton: 11th February 2007

Allan: 9th February 2007
Sorry it has taken me a while to write this but just wanted to say Peter you are brill! I was privileged to see you perform on stage with other members of Steeleye span at the Preston Guildhall in December. Wow you blew me away. Hope I can get to see you again. Take care and thanks for sharing your gift.

Malc Williams: 1st February 2007

It's wonderful that you still carry on the good work, thank you for that! But please, stop by in Finland for a gig or two some time, hopefully soon...

steve from oz: 14th January 2007
Thank you Howard. I enjoyed your review.... recommended reading to anyone contemplating buying the album.

Johnny: 14th January 2007
I just found a wonderful review of Bloody Men on www.greenmanreview.com.

The answer is in there.......

Clive Pilcher: 12th January 2007
I first saw Steeleye Span at the Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone, around 1970/71 I think. Since then I've seen the band in London and Norwich (when I was at Uni). Still play the records - mostly on CD now, but the old vinyls get an airing now and again! Many thanks for all the enjoyment your music has givne me over 35 years.

Richard Hollis: 12th January 2007
Yes that works fine.

Richard

Michael Higgins: 12th January 2007
Trying out the new system as requested, Peter. Let's see how it works.

Interesting to see your post about Mark Williams. Looks like I got the right bass player!

Hope to talk with you soon-- and I love the new CD!

Rupert: 12th January 2007
EVERYONE HEARD OF SPANFEST 2007! I'M GONNA BE THERE!

steve from oz: 12th January 2007
please enlighten me: what IS the hidden meaning within 'Lord Elgin?' Love Bloody Men. Wish Peter had sung a lead vocal.

David Plunkett (McBeastly): 12th January 2007
Hi Peter,

This is just to check your new posting scheme, as you requested on the BB.

Seems to work from this end.

Cheers

David

Mark Compston: 5th January 2007
....and it looks like you`ll have to type it into the address bar....

Mark Compston: 5th January 2007
On that URL, there should be a ".html" at the end after "/index"

Mark Compston: 4th January 2007
For Jacky Mattison - Try this link : http://web.archive.org/web/20040404150136/www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/~zierke/steeleye.span/index.html

You should be able to access the Discography of Reinhard Zierke`s old Steeleye Span website from there. A lot of the lyrics, including those for the two songs you refer to, can still be viewed.

btw, you need to click on the "Sails Of Silver" album on the list to get the lyrics for those two tracks.

Kitty Wake: 4th January 2007
Keith, that explanation certainly sounds convincing and definitive!

It`s a few years since I`ve seen the video, so I`d appreciate if anyone with a copy of 25 LIVE would be so good as to enlighten me as to what Peter did actually say.

Keith: 4th January 2007
Re the question regarding the origin of "Seagull" in relation to the game of shove-halfpenny, although I love the seagull poo idea, I believe that it actaully refers to the "3 in a bed" which follow in the lyrics. When scoring in the game, it is customary to make a vertical chalk mark in the "margin" of the relevant row of the board for each coin that scores (i.e. ends up within the horizontal lines). If three coins score in the same row in one single turn, rather than make three separate marks the number "3" is sometimes entered in the box.If done from the side of the board it appears from the playing end like a child's interpretation of a seagull (as drawn in those skies which always have the sun with lines coming out of it for the rays!)

John and Diana Wilson: 3rd January 2007
Been to two dates this last tour, Reading and Basingstoke. The first was so good we had to go again. Peter, you were magnificent as always and are a musical genius. Agree that Lord Elgin should be a single and Bloody Men is superb. In fact, any Steeleye song should be heard by a much greater audience and we yearn for the day when Steeleye is recognised as one of the best bands of all time. The performances on both nights were amazing and we love you all. Let`s hear it too for Liam on drums, the unsung hero at the back. He is the best. Keep gigging, don`t ever stop.

1st January 2007
Miriam Titterton was at Edinburgh University around 1969 as far as I can remember. :

PAUL BAXTER, OLDHAM, LANCS: 1st January 2007
Hi Peter

Happy new year to you, your family, the band and Steeleye fans everywhere. Thanks for a superb year, long may you continue

Paul

James: 31st December 2006
Hi Peter.

I love the new Steeleye Span album!

Your solo work is most impressive, too, needless to say!!

Best of luck, in all your musical projects, for 2007.

Rory, from Cork in Ireland: 31st December 2006
Peter, Happy New Year to you and your loved ones, to the rest of the Steeleye crew, and to the band`s multitudinous and multifarious fans worldwide.

Tell the record company/management to get the finger out and arrange some gigs in Ireland. They`d be a sellout, I can assure you.

Jacky Mattison: 31st December 2006
I love listening and singing Steeleye Span songs and would like the words to Let her go Down and Gone to America

Lars Nilsson: 30th December 2006
A Happy New Year to Peter, the rest of Steeleye Span and fans all over the world. And congratulations to the band for the new terrific album.

Steeleye stalwart: 29th December 2006
That could of course include a prolonged Long Lankin...

Steeleye stalwart: 29th December 2006
Many congratulations to Peter and Steeleye Span for yet another year of brilliant music!

Best wishes for the forthcoming new year and here`s longing for the prolonged longevity of the legend that is Steeleye Span!

Kitty Wake: 26th December 2006
To Dave Lewis - I seem to recall(from Peter`s introduction on the "25 LIVE" video which I no longer have a copy of)that`s it`s to do with the fact that the driftwood used to make the board for the game was stained with seagull poo. Or "guano", to use a more scientific term.

Micke: 26th December 2006
I get so envious when I read about people going to the December tour concerts. Why can't you come and play in Sweden sometime? I was with my dad at Cropredy two years ago and fell in love with folk rock, but I missed this year when you were playing.

Dave Jones: 24th December 2006
Now back in lincolnshire after a trip down to Cornwall to see the gig at Carnglaze Caverns.

Fantastic venue and once again a brilliant performance, absolutely top form from the opening with Long Lankin to Gaudete at the end.

My wife and I have been following for more than 35 years now and never miss at least one gig opn each tour, such wonderful memories, shame the athritis prevents us from dancing in the aisles these days.

Vikki: 24th December 2006
Hi Peter, I just wanted to say thank you to you and the rest of the band, and all the crew as well, for all the pleasure you've given to so many people on this tour. The St Neots gig tonight was fabulous, and well worth the drive (although I will admit to being VERY glad that the fog finally lifted today!)

I've thoroughly enjoyed all five of the gigs I've been to on this tour, and would have come to more if it had been possible!

Anyway, I hope you all have a wonderful christmas.

Thank you again,

Luv Vikki

Joe: 23rd December 2006
Hi Peter.

Well, what a great year 2006 has been for STEELEYE SPAN!!!

Delighted as I was, in 2002, at the announcement of Maddy rejoining the band for a Reunion Tour, I`d originally expected the tour to be a one-off, so it`s just amazing that Steeleye Span is still going strong four years on - still gigging, still recording albums. Fantastic. I`m proud to be a fan of such dedicated musicians.

Keep it up, guys...

Adrian: 20th December 2006
Happy Christmas/Holidays/Drinking Season etc. to Steeleye Span and all their fans.

Incidentally, I just came across some info on Rick Kemp on the Wikipedia Steeleye Span page - i.e., that he is, or was, a member of The Carlisle Pagan Society; and that he is often "confused with" Assisant Professor Rick(Dick)Kemp, a leading authority on Shakespeare. It also mentions that Rick is the "ex-husband" of Maddy Prior. And I`d thought they were still married.

Vikki: 19th December 2006
Hi Peter,

Thanks to all of you for another fabulous night at Reading last week. You guys have just got better and better each time I've seen you on this tour.

Lizzie King (17) Southampton: 18th December 2006
i have been to two of your concerts in the last year (Winhcester at easter and Salisbury last nite) and when iwent to the Winchester concert i heard Lord Eligin for the first time. I was the song the song that most stuck in my head (i was singing it alll the way home- parents were most annoyed). But last nite i was just waiting for you to play that one song! i thought you werent going to when it got pretty late- i was sooooo pleased when u played it!!

i also have to say i brought a copy of Bloody Men in the interval for my mum as a christmas present and now i cant WAAIT till christmas, she opens it and i can put the songs onto my mp3 player!! i actually cant wait a week! yay! your music always makes me smile... even with all the drownings and hangings and suicides LONG LIVE STEELEYE SPAN

ps- when are you coming to Southampton?

Margaret Cluett: 18th December 2006
Peter - you are a man of amazing talent and a wonderful personality which becomes apparent every time you speak to the audience. We saw you with Steelye last night in Salisbury and all of the band were on brilliant form but you shone out with magnificence and your fiddle playing made my heart leap with excitement, particularly on Long Lankin and the song you did with Maddy about the two women who died in the plague. You continue to amaze and delight and we love you .

Richard Hollis: 18th December 2006
This is a nice email I recieved from Tom Dyer, which was meant for the band really.

GAUDETE.

Boy, if there was one Steeleye Span song that stuck out for me, it was this one...I heard this on an alternative radio program called "Fresh Air" (WKSU FM 87.9) if I recall correctly, back in 1980...I bought a casette tape down in Tower Records in London around Christmas 1985...I think everyone I played that "carol" around was awestruck...It has always been a favorite song for me to hear this time of year...May God bless you all, and Merry Christmas to the UK and the troops serving overseas! Regards, Tom

Dave Lewis: 12th December 2006
When I told my partner that I couldn't get her tickets to George Michael but I had managed to get us second row seats for Steeleye Span she was less than impressed. Peter, you completely won her over. After a couple of songs she whispered to me 'that man can play a fiddle'!

It was great to her Seagull again. As a Shove Ha'penny player myself (94 Reformed: runners up in Barnstaple Summer League Division 2) 'Gold Watch' is a phrase I wish I heard more often, but I've never been able to find out the meaning of the word 'Seagull'.

Can anyone help?

Vikki: 11th December 2006
I meant to post this earlier. The gig at the Stables on the third was fantastic, (and I got there okay, despite the best efforts of the roadworks people to confuse my sat nav system by closing a road...)

I was glad to see Gaudete back in the setlist. (It was missing at the Wycombe gig)
Bloody Men is firmly installed on my MP3 player, usually on repeat, and Lord Elgin is definitely my favourite track.
Anyway, looking forward to Wednesday's gig at Reading....

Ben Hepenstall: 7th December 2006
Tally ho chaps! There can be no doubt that Lord Elgin should be a single...if only Park Records were a good enough label to do anything about it! They really are hopeless. Anyway, I shall be emailing Sir Terrance too...

Neil and Angela Smith: 6th December 2006
We should bombard Wogan et all to play Lord Elgin and get Steeleye to put it on MySpace and send a witty letter with copy of Elgin to Wogan Think Artic \monkeys it can be done!! Steeleye Span for the Xmas No 1 Who's up for it?

I've just emailed Terry now its up to you all

Do it make Steeleye Span No 1 for Xmas!!

Neil and Angela Smith

Jan Maddison: 5th December 2006
Peter Knights music brings tears to my eyes it is so very beautiful.

I have just bought the new album from the gig at The Stables, it has been played over and over already!!!

Graham Anthony: 5th December 2006
"Bloody Men" carries on the renowned excellence of Steeleye, but listen to "Whummil Bore" - Peter Knight at his brilliant best! - also agree with another guest book comment - make "Lord Elgin" a single release!!!!

Howard: 5th December 2006
We had also been thinking that if LORD ELGIN were to be released as a single there was grave danger of it being a hit.
However its probably the case that most followers of Steeleye would have bought the BLOODY MEN album anyway......

Dave Nicholson: 4th December 2006
"Bloody Men" just arrived from "Park"....Bloody Marvelous....."What A Band"!!!not a bad track on it...looking forward to Salisbury.
I've said it before "Lord Elgin" is single material,Wogan, Walker & the Radio 2 lot would love it!,ROCK ON STEELEYE!!!

Greg: 3rd December 2006
Saw the Bristol Gig. It was superb. Great show and Peter, you were on top form. You are a great musician and the lifeblood of Steeleye! Keep it going for years yet.

Ravenchild: 3rd December 2006
I went to the Bristol gig and it has to be the best Steeleye gig I've ever been to. I enjoyed All Around My Hat and Gaudete as that was the first time I have heard them live. The band seemed to be really enjoying them and a great night was had by all.

Eric Clayton: 2nd December 2006
I saw steeleye span at Buxton last week. Loved the electric violin to pieces. Thanks for making my ears ring with sound.

Vikki : 1st December 2006
Hi Peter, it's me again. Just back from the Wycombe gig which was another fantastic show. Many thanks to all of you for providing so much pleasure! I can't wait for Sunday at Milton Keynes now (I may have indulged in a spot of accidental last minute ticket buying ...;))Anyway, see you on Sunday, and thanks again!

Geoff from Basingstoke: November 30th 2006
Just had to add to earlier comments and say the Basingstoke concert was brilliant. What a great start to the tour! I especially enjoyed the new material. Steeleye really seem to be in a very progressive phase. Long may it continue ! Thanks Peter and everyone for a very enjoyable time, and some great music over the last few years.

I've sent my review of the gig to Richard for his website.

Best wishes ,

Geoff

Iain Matthews: November 27th 2006
Hi Peter. It's been a long, long time.
I was just playing "An ancient cause" again and loving every minute of it, as usual. I bought it when it was first released and have never tired of hearing it. You are one hell of a musician.

All the best.
Iain

Richard Hollis: November 27th 2006
I totally agree with Nick Clack. That was a great concert. Bags of exciting new stuff and the older songs done in a new way. Brilliant!

Karen and Mark Osborne: November 26th 2006
I purchased your album at Derby (saturday 25 nov)and asked you to sign the cover for us. What a great album! I would just like to say a heartfelt thankyou. Thankyou for just playing your music.

Mark.

Nick Clark: November 26th 2006
What a great show ! I know this tour's going to go well for you guys with such a fresh, innovative and exciting set. It's a privilege watching professional musicians at the absolute top of their game. Thanks to you all for great hospitality.A night to remember !

Howard: November 24th 2006
Just got back home after the Basingstoke concert with a hectic 24 hours visit to the UK.

Enjoyed the concert, great meeting Ken, Peter & Maddy afterwards....

Review to follow.......

Marshall, Tyneside: November 24th 2006
Hi Pete, I've followed Steeleye Span since their conception in '69 although sometimes work and homelife overtake me sometimes haha . I was disappointed though to find that you are touring again but this time not coming any further north than York. Please on your next tour, remember your fans up here and come see us as well. Good luck with the rest of the tour,

Marshall

Vikki: November 24th 2006
Hi Peter, I know you probably won't get this for ages, but I'm just back from the Basingstoke gig, and wanted to say thanks to you and the rest of the band for a fabulous night!! It was absolutely wonderful, and it was so nice to hear 'The Song Will Remain' again, as that's one of my favourites! I loved Gaudete too.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing you again at Wycombe and Reading, and thanks again for a fantastic show,

Luv Vikki

Christopher Wilson: November 24th 2006
Just this moment come home from Steeleye Span's opening gig at The Anvil, Basingstoke. It was breathtaking. For you all to remain so fresh, so alive, so absolutely musical and so beautifully rehearsed I take as a personal compliment, as did everyone else in tonight's sell-out theatre - your performance was electrifying. It is a privilege to have seen you again, and I wish you bon voyage on the long long road to Christmas. You all give such pleasure; I hope you derive some in return, from the looks on our faces, and from the knowledge that we love and admire you all.

Max Lightbody: November 16th 2006
I hope, but I don't suppose Steeleye Span will be coming to the Netherlands, I'm an absolute fan and i would love to see them live.

Steeleye Span in The Lincolnshire Echo: November 14th 2006
I managed to get The Span in the paper!!!

I'm a BA Hons fine art / illustration student at Lincoln University, and I'm currently working on a proposal for a piece of Site Specific Art. My proposal is for a replica of Lincoln Cathedral made out of haystacks. I got the idea partly from the album cover for your album "Commoner's Crown" and because I mentioned this, they've ran an article about my proposal with lengthy references to yourselves!! Good publicity I hope

Here's a
link to the article which is in today's paper:

I hope you appreciate my work there!!

Helen

GIGDATES

Chris Fyfe: October 29th 2006
May I congratulate 'Gigspanner' on, possibly one of the finest 'live' gigs I have ever been privileged to have seen.

Comprising of:

Peter Knight (Steeleye Span) - Violin
Roger Flack (The TABS) - Guitar
Vincent Salzfass - Percussion
augmented by Gary Blakeley (The TABS) - Violin

The gig was at the 'Jenny Lind' in Old Town, High Street.

The music that they played was excellent (some penned by Peter and some traditional) and the people in the audience really looked like they were having a great time.

May I also congratulate 'Jackie' the landlady for booking them.

Absolutely Brilliant!
