Tharlach: October 5th 2006
Hello Peter. I just listened to Rocket Cottage last night for the first time in many years - it remains one of my favourite Steeleye Span records. It brought many memories back and I believe the album deserves a critical reappraisal. It was great to discover this site and, in finishing, can I ask you if you remeber the gig at the Royal Albert Hall with Horslips supporting. From memory of some old articles I read - I think in Sounds or Melody Maker - loud music was banned for many years from the RAH following that gig because Horslips played so loud. Is that correct?

Larry Battle: October 4th 2006
I'm hoping to see you in the U. S.

Lasse: October 3rd 2006
How is the new album coming along? When will it be released?

Chris Fyfe: September 7th 2006
Peter

I do not know if you have heard of 'Sophie Solomon'?

She is a great vilion player who plays both Classical music and Klezmer music.

Hope you and Deborah are both keeping well?

Chris

Suzie: August 18th 2006
Great to hear about the new CD - if the new material you played on the last tour is anything to go by, it's going to be a corker!

Keep up the good work peter knight & steeleye!

ps. I didn't know you played the guitar?! That song was brill!

Phil Lancaster: August 13th 2006
Saw Feast of Fiddles last night in Broadstairs, brilliant, a turbulent night calmed by some outstanding music, but none better than "Too late for shadows" outstanding. Thanks Peter. It was a great evening

jack sapadin---dbetts36@aol.com: August 9th 2006
wonderful web site. i have been a steeleye span from way back. sae you guys at bootom line in nyc way back when ---all six shows.

Vic Butler: August 1st 2006
Thank you for the concert in Alexandra park Peter. I flew three thousand miles to be there, and was so happy I made the effort. More of Gigspanner please.

Helen: July 29th 2006
You'll never believe this!

There's an article in today's The Times on a band called Circulus, described as "the nation's leading (and possibly only) psychedelic medieval-folk rock band". As you might imagine I nearly had a cup of tea quake upon reading this Ignorance!! How could this person Not Know of The Span!!??!! Don't worry, I have made absolutely sure he does now!

And check out Circulus - maybe they'll come to Lincoln with you when you come back here again.....

go on myspace - it's fab on there!!

P and A: July 28th 2006
Just to say thank you for such a GREAT gig at Nettlebed on Tuesday. Don't know how you all managed to keep going in that heat, but your music was as brilliant as ever. Good to hear there's a new CD on the way. See/hear you in Reading, and hopefully Gigspanner and Tanna before then! Many thanks, once again.

Pirkko S: July 26th 2006
Enjoyed tremendously the concert last night in Nettlebed. Seeing Steeleye Span up close and personal (from the third row) was a real treat. Husband who originally was sceptical about whether he would last to the end of the gig, was tapping his feet and commenting on the excellence of the musicians by the second song and saying that this is so much better than Kaiserchiefs (and their one chord songs!).

Keep it up!

Rupert: July 20th 2006
Peter - please, please, PLEASE release a new CD with all the songs you tried on your last tour! All the stuff was fantastic!

- I cannot forget that Lord Elgin (?) song where you played guitar! Beautiful song. PLEASE
!

Bernard Adam (Denis): July 16th 2006
Thank you once more for this wonderful evening at Schloss Freiberg(Austria).

Please see

Chris Fyfe: July 12th 2006
Peter

I am sending you the web address of John Skelton (ex House Band) who is a marvelous flute, whistle and percussion player I have known for many years.

Please could you give me your honest opinion on what you think of his latest album?

Chris

Helen Dearnley: July 11th 2006
Thanks people for your insights, I shall however continue to imagine that a Gnidrolog is a kind of stone worn by a Welsh dwarf/goblin, that has special magic powers; it's more fun.

I can sense that Steeleye are thinking of coming back to Lincoln....they're all thinking of doing a gig in the castle....

Nina Harries: July 6th 2006
Hi everyone,

I'm from Germany. I've seen the drawing picture form Staring Robin. It's famous, by the way, you all see, that my name is Nina Harries, and now the craysiest; i´ve got a brohter; calling robin. I´ve send a mail to him with this picture!!! ;o)

When i was a little girl, i´ve draw a same picuture, as birthdaypresent for my brother! :o)

Wendy Adams: June 19th 2006
Saw you all at the White Rock, Hastings after plucking up the courage to come alone! Good to visit all my old 'haunts' in Hastings too!

Excellent show as usual. x

Vikki: June 6th 2006
Hi Peter,

Just wanted to say thank you to you and the rest of the band for three fantastic gigs (Cambridge, Hayes and Oxford - I DID try to fit at least one more in but couldn't manage it) I hope the new album will be out soon, because I have bits of all the new songs popping in and out of my head now......

Looking forward to the Nettlebed gig in July!

Luv Vikki

Dave Nicholson: June 4th 2006
Hi Peter, Great gig up at Tewksbury, was very impressed by the song in which you played guitar(cannot for the life of me remember the title)but there,s a single in the making,ToTP even!!!!

Good to hear Rick singing"Cold,Haily,Windy Night"to the new arrangement, hows about him giving "Edwin" an airing.

Best wishes to all the band, may you continue to keep giving us great music,Thanks for a great gig, look forward to the next one.

heather: June 3rd 2006
saw you in cambridge on april 30th, and LOVED IT. still of the highest standard that you have always been, long may you go on.

Marion, Roger, Robbie (17) Lizzie (16) Hungerford: June 1st 2006
Had to see Feast of Fiddles again at Marlborough, definitely not disappointed, even better than I remembered - oh what a night, absolutely brilliant & what a setting, made a change from the theatre. Even persuaded friends who hate violins to go this year, they loved it too. Followed that with Steeleye at Oxford, last night of the tour, just great, such a good evening, atmosphere everything. Your playing Peter just gets better & better. Looked up Lord Elgin when we got home, glad to say I was right, we all loved the song, why not release it as a single? Only one complaint about Oxford - Seagull - my daughter was too young to go with us to see you at Basingstoke last time I remember you singing Seagull, but has never forgotten what I told her about the special effects. We looked up but there was no seagull there!! We did laugh when we saw other people looking up aswell, obviously all long time fans. Glad to see so many young people in the theatre, a new generation learning about great music. Love Marion

Fran Langston: May 19th 2006
Just wanted to say 'thank you' for another fantastic concert, saw you at Hastings earlier in May. Every time I see you I think it is the best yet and each time you all just get better and better.

Joanna Paynter: May 17th 2006
I have always listened to my dad playing LPs of Steeleye's music and have recently been to watch them in concert in Truro with my dad and they were brilliant! Peter Knight is so talented and Maddy's voice is beautiful...in fact all of them were fantastic! folkrock on!

Jim & Sue Hubbard: May 17th 2006
We saw you playing with Steeleye Span in Truro last night (16May06) - it was our first experience of Steeleye live and we were blown away. Sue thought that the 'riddling fiddler' was just brilliant! Thanks for a great night!

conny from Nothern Germany: May 15th 2006
Hi! I just want to say that it is a great idea from you to give us the opportunity to "talk" to you and other people. I am longing for visitting concerts of you and Steeleye Span. My family kept me very busy in April and May. So I hope I can visit you in autumn. I hope you have a great tour with Steeleye Span. Love, Conny

Joellen Robinson: May 9th 2006
Thank you for three marvellous gigs this spring! Now I'm itching to go to Cropredy!

Johan Vanhecke, Antwerp: May 8th 2006
I also complained to John Dagnell of Park Records about the new record. He was so kind to tell me that there is a difference: the live CD is another show than the DVD. The DVD is recorded in Tewkesbury, while most of the CD recordings are from Southampton. So it's the same tour, but a different concert. I apologize for my too fast conclusions.

Angus: May 8th 2006
Went to see Steeleye recently at their Mansfield gig, after thirty odd years as a Steeleye fan i must make the comment that it was the worst i have seen! The choise of material was bad, they played hardly any old favoutites, they just seemed to be going through the motions, pains me to say it will be the last one i attend if future ones are of this standard!

Graham Anthony, Rilla Mill, Cornwall: May 6th 2006
Please tell me where I can find the words to "Who Told the Butcher?" - after listening to the new live CD, the tune is going round in my head with VERY garbled words!!!!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Who Told The Butcher

Who told the Butcher all about the Grey Goose
It could have been the Poacher
Nobody knows
It could have been the Royal Coachman
Or Connemara Black
Listen well to what the ladies say
And bring old 'Brownie' back

And who told the Butcher about the Lady Of The Lake
It could have been The Queen Of The Water
Nobody knows,
It could have been old Soldier Palmer
Or Teal and Black,
Listen well to what the ladies say
And bring old 'Brownie' back

Tie the Damsels two to the droppers
Tie old Kate McClaren to the point.
There's none so wise to the rise of a river
The Butchers out there tonight
Tie the Damsels two to the droppers
Tie old Kate McClaren to the point.
There's none so wise to the rise of a river
The Butchers out there tonight
The Butchers out there tonight

Who told the Butcher all about the Grenadier
It could have been the Teal and Green
Nobody knows
It could have been old Wickham's Fancy
Or Humpy Black
Listen well to what the ladies say
And bring old 'Brownie' back

Tie the Damsels two to the droppers
Tie old Kate McClaren to the point.
There's none so wise to the rise of a river
The Butchers out there tonight
Tie the damsels two to the droppers
Tie old Kate McClaren to the point.
There's none so wise to the rise of a river
The Butchers out there tonight
The Butchers out there tonight
The Butchers out there tonight

Johan Vanhecke, Antwerp: May 5th 2006
I just saw the track list of the new live CD, and I must say I am very disappointed: this is the soundtrack of the DVD. I had hoped to hear (fragments of) the anniversary concert. Now we have to buy a CD for only two bonus tracks, if we already have the DVD.

Mark Compston: April 30th 2006
By the way, I discovered that the Discography page can be accessed. First, click on an album title, for example All Around My Hat on the Alphabetic(al) List, then, on the top left hand corner where it says >Steeleye Span> Records>, click on >Steeleye Span>, which opens a page containing just the Menu list on the left hand panel. The Discography page on this list can be opened.

demon lover: April 29th 2006
Steeleye Span gigs in Italy. Will that be a first for the band?

Mark Compston: April 12th 2006
The Wikipedia page for Steeleye Span has a link to Reinhard`s site, albeit only some of the pages still download. However, even though the Discography page appears to be gone, a lot of the album info and lyrics are still downloadable from the Alphabetical List, Tours And Reviews, History Of pages.

BARB, HINCKLEY: April 7th 2006
My first experience of your playing with Feast of Fiddles this year and now I'm hooked just sent for your latest CD. You can make music seem so effortless yet make it a living, breathing thing - Thanks again for passing the card to Chris at Rugby - Best wishes and see you at Cropredy.

Dave Nicholson: April 1st 2006
Peter, went up to Marlbrough to see Feast of Fiddles on Thursday, Brilliant! Brilliant!.Looking forward to Steeleye at Tewksbury.

Johan Vanhecke, Antwerp: March 28th 2006
Reinhard Zierke writes on his personal website that he has deleted his folk pages, not only Steeleye Span, for personal reasons. I agree that this is a great loss.

Martin Dury: March 28th 2006
As usual, Feast of Fiddles was a hugely enjoyable night out. It's a great mix of players and styles and yours just about comes out on top for us. Sharp Goes Walkabout really was superb, taking on a totally new direction with all the other scrapers adding their own individual parts. The wall of sound that FOF produce is still amazing and I for one cannot wait to hear it on the Cropredy sound system.

Thank you!

Joe: March 26th 2006
-- To Bob Roche - those quintessential Steeleye tracks you referred to are from the albums Below The Salt, Parcel Of Rogues, Now We Are Six, Commoners Crown, All Around My Hat; and you certainly can`t go wrong with those few, as a start. But you`ll probably end up getting all of the albums in the long run, anyway.

Enjoy...

Ray Ford: March 26th 2006
Peter, good luck with the Feast Of Fiddles tour. Looking forward to seeing you and Steeleye Span in May.

Howard: March 24th 2006
FYI Reinhard's Steeleye site is off the air.

If one looks at his main web page there is a message:

"Sorry but I have removed my folk music website for personal reasons."

phyl: March 22nd 2006
Last night my daughter called to say she'd been researching Steeleye Span for an assignment for the music course she's doing at college. A prime opportunity for a wander down memory lane - saw Steeleye Span a few times at the City Hall in Newcastle when I was in my teens and bought every LP I could get my hands on. They gave me part of the soundtrack for those formative years and I was really touched that, out of all the stuff I have played to my kids over the years, my daughter chose Steeleye Span for her assignment. She recommended I look them up on the internet so I found this. If Newcastle ever came up on a tour list I couldn't stay away.

PAUL BAXTER OLDHAM, LANCS.: March 22nd 2006
Hi Peter

In reply to Kevin Scott`s entry ( Mar 2nd),regarding Reinhard Zierke`s website,I have been having the same problem "this page cannot be displayed" every time, I was starting to think I had a problem with my computer, perhaps if Reinhard sees this and Kevin`s entry he could leave a message and let us know what the problem is, it is a superb Steeleye website, it would be a shame to lose it

paul

Neil and Joanne Higgins, from Galway in Ireland: March 12th 2006
Hello Peter. We`re both fans of Steeleye Span, and for the first time in years we`ll be making the trip over to the Cropredy festival in August to see yourself and the Span strutting your stuff.

All the best, Neil and Joanne.

Karen Mughan: March 12th 2006
Going to be home in Wales for 10 short days in April and I'm frantically looking for some gigs to attend. Wish I could be there for the fiddle fest events but I arrive just 2 days too late. On with my search. Hopefully you'll return soon to the us.

Warren Barnett: March 5th 2006
Steeleye consuming my thoughts lately, spent a wonderful day with Nigel on Tuesday last week.........Miss you all come back to Australia when time permits

Warren (Sydney)

Kevin Scott: March 2nd 2006
Hi Peter.

News arrived that Reinhard Zierke's excellent website, the source of much Steeleye and British folk-related information, has disappeared. I wonder if you or anyone knows if it will return, or be hosted on some other site, as it's very highly regarded and important.

Kevin

Phil: March 1st 2006

Keep on folk-rocking, Steeleye Span !!!!!!!

Joellen Robinson: February 27th 2006
I just wanted to let you know how much Phillipa and I enjoyed meeting you and seeing Tanna in Columbus! Terrific show, and all three of you are simply fantastic! Thank you!

M.Osborne. (aka Baldrick): February 21st 2006
Awesome! Look forward to seeing you at Mansfield with Steeleye. PLEASE Don't stop. Music just wouldn't be the same.

Stephen Lacey: February 18th 2006
I hope PK & co are having a good time gigging in the States. Roll on the Spring Tour.

I`ve been a fan of Steeleye Span for many years and I admire Peter`s tireless commitment to the band.

What a brilliant musician and a great bloke too.

Jan: February 10th 2006
Just been watching the BBC4 folk programme - just in case! It was wonderful to see such an early recording although it makes me feel very old!

Gary: February 10th 2006
Really enjoyed seeing Steeleye Span on Crackerjack 'miming' All Around My Hat. ('Folk on the BBC' on BBC Four) Groovy clothes. You looked as if you were all enjoying yourselves. It certainly took me back!!!

Donal; Cork, Ireland: February 8th 2006
I`ll be at the Steeleye gig in Birmingham on May 1st.

With the day that`s in it, is there any chance of a reprise of "Staines Morris"(aka "Holiday")that Steeleye Span used to perform at gigs in the early years?

Anyway, Padstow will do nicely.

Sarah Pierson: February 5th 2006
Peter, just to say how much I`ve enjoyed your solo recordings, the Gemini Cadenza and Too Late For Shadows. Your early classical training definitely paid off, and your musical versatility and virtuosity is most entertaining and impressive. I love the Steeleye Span material too, I hasten to add. Best of luck to you, Maddy, Rick, Liam and Ken.

John Morton, Merseyside: February 5th 2006
Peter`s going to be busy over the next few months, eh?! What with his US gigs, and then back to Britain for all the Feast of Fiddles and Steeleye gigs. I`m planning on seeing the band at the Liverpool gig myself.

Fair play to Peter Knight, to Steeleye Span, and to British folk-rockers one and all!

Joe: February 5th 2006
To Michael Downey -

Hi, Michael. What were the Steeleye songs at the Glasgow gig that you`d not heard live before? Any chance of a review of your own on the gig?

Thanks. Joe

Joellen Robinson: February 4th 2006
I have to agree with the comment below regarding Cropredy. I've never had the opportunity to go until this year, and can't wait! So much good stuff it's almost overwhelming!

My daughter and I are also looking forward to seeing Tanna on 12 Feb in Columbus, Ohio!

Stephen Cooper: February 2nd 2006
A lifelong Steeleye fan, but in particular always an ear open for PK's delightful if not haunting violin virtuosos.

If you Maddy and Kate Rusby formed a trio, what a haunting set up that would be.

From a devoted Steeleye aficionado for over 30 years and still wanting more!

Emma Roberts: February 1st 2006
The enhanced reissues of the first three albums are absolutely brill!

And still the next Steeleye Span live CD to look forward to!

Andy Mannion: February 1st 2006

Viva la Span!

Ian Donaldson, County Durham: February 1st 2006
I just can`t wait till this year`s Cropredy!!!

The two greatest folk-rock bands ever Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention playing the same bill again after so many years!

Then there`s Feast Of Fiddles with, amongst others, Fairporter Chris Leslie and Steeleye Spanner Peter Knight!

And Dave Swarbrick is back too!

Looking forward to a Peter Knight/Swarb duet...

Bob Roche: February 1st 2006
Hello there. I`m a recent convert to Steeleye Span. I came across a copy of Original Masters and, not being a big fan of folk or traditional music, I`m amazed at how traditional music can be so compelling when adapted in this way. Standout tracks for me on this compilation are, in no particular order, The Wife Of Ushers Well, Long Lankin, Seven Hundred Elves, Misty Moisty Morning, Alison Gross, Thomas The Rhymer, Drink Down The Moon...all brilliant! But there`s not a weak track on the whole double-CD.

And Gaudete was a real surprise. The song title didn`t mean anything to me, but the song itself was immediately recognisable with its wonderful mediaeval ambiance. I`d heard it before as occasional background music on history documentaries and the like, but it was great to actually discover, quite by accident, a recording of the song - and performed by a group of long-haired folk rockers in the 1970s!

Anyway, I`d like to hear more of this fascinating music but, with such a large back catalogue going back over so many years, I`d be grateful for any suggestions as to which albums to get next, and for comments from fans on their favourite albums, line-up, or period in this band`s long career.

Thanks.

Maurice Walker: February 1st 2006
I hadn`t been aware, until just now after doing a quick websearch, that Steeleye Span`s The Golden Vanity is on the Best Of British Folk Rock CD, on the Park label(PRKCD36).

hip gnosis: January 31st 2006
Helen, if you scroll to the very bottom of this page and click on "Older", on that page there`s some comments on Gnidrolog and URLs for Gnidrolog album reviews that were posted by guestbookers a few months ago.

Spriguns Of Tolgus was another one you may or may not have heard of. The Steeleye-connection there was Tim Hart.

And just in case you don`t know what that means(as I didn`t), and to save you the trouble of asking - a sprigun is an evil Cornish pixie, and Tolgus a tin mine in Cornwall.

hip gnosis: January 31st 2006
Gnidrolog was the name of a band that featured Steeleye Span`s Nigel Pegrum. The name comes from the re-arranged letters of the surname Goldring, with an extra "o" - Goldring being the surname of two brothers in the band.

Helen Dearnley, Lincoln: January 29th 2006
What is this word GNIDROLOG? I don't have a clue, but I love obscure words. It sounds Welsh. My father possesses the album All Around My Hat. I was therefore brought up on Black Jack Davey and Gamble Gold (and Robin Hood). I always thought that the band actually looked like that, but I'm glad to see that we don't have to view you from the side to see what you really look like!

I became absolutely intrigued to discover the history of the band and songs, especially as I am a Lincolnshire yellow belly myself currently living in your old favourite Lincoln. I wondered if there's any chance ye all will return, ye all return any chance there be? (see what I've done there?!) I've been looking for some contemporary folk but no one else really compares! Thankyou for beguiling me with tales of yore. Jolly good work!

You can always spot a robber by his violin?!?*!?

Rupert: January 25th 2006
What a shame you have no Q&A page anymore! That's a shame, but I do appreciate you must be busy. However, in its absence I have a question for the Guest Book hacks - why did the song, The Golden Vanity never make it on to the TIME album? According to a website (Google Steeleye & said song) it should have appeared as the last track on the '95 album. But it didn't! I must say however, 'this song will remain' was a great way to end the CD anyway.

Having recently got hold of this song - and liking it very much I must say - I just wondered why it didn't make it?

Anyway Pete, regards to you and the rest of the band.

Michael Downey Lennoxtown Scotland: January 23rd 2006
Hi again Peter here is a review of the Glasgow gig from the Scotsman newspaper.

STEELEYE SPAN ****

THE GARAGE, GLASGOW

AS MADDY Prior remarked, The Garage is not the kind of venue that Steeleye Span normally play, but the veteran English folk-rock band rose to the challenge in fine style on a rare live appearance in Glasgow.

Along with Fairport Convention and The Strawbs, Steeleye Span were leading lights in the folk-rock wave of the late '60s, and there was no shortage of genuine band history on stage. Prior was a founder member, while fiddler Pete Knight and bassist Rick Kemp go back to early-70s incarnations. Drummer Liam Genocky joined in 1989, and only guitarist Ken Nicol is a recent recruit.

Maddy Prior's voice has darkened over the years, but she remains the trump card in their music, and her delivery of old favourites like Tam Lin and the more recent Van Dieman's Land revealed that her vocal artistry is undiminished.

Knight, Kemp and Nicol made their own contributions as lead vocalists, while the band's trademark four-part harmony singing was heard to striking unaccompanied effect on another old favourite, The King. There was never any sense of simply going through the motions, other than in slightly routine versions of their early-70s chart hits All Around My Hat and Gaudete.

Neil and Angela Smith: January 20th 2006
Hi Peter
When will the dates for the April/May tour being released please?

Thanks
Neil

Ravenchild: January 19th 2006
I disagree with point made on the 2004 dvd review that 'we don’t even get to see the audience means that the atmosphere generated by a Steeleye concert does not fully come across.' In a lot of music dvds you don't see enough of the band playing, the film has been sliced and diced like an mtv video with shots of the audiences hands or whatever.

Michael Downey, Lennoxtown, Scotland: January 15th 2006
Hi Peter just to say a big thank you for Friday night's gig in Glasgow. It was fantastic. I think the crowd's reaction said it all. A wonderful set with great songs - some that I had never heard live before. The band certainly appeared to be enjoying the night also.I think Friday certainly proved that you are welcome in Scotland any time. Please do not leave it too long next time.

With Kindest Regards

Michael, Wendy and Calum Downey

Mick Lyons: January 14th 2006
Hi, Peter. I hope the first Steeleye gig of the year in Glasgow last night went well. I look forward to seeing the band on their forthcoming Spring Tour.

Little Sir Bazza; Chelmsford; UK: January 13th 2006
To other Steeleye fans yet to get the DVD: get it - it's brill. See my review on Michael Newbery's website at http://users.actrix.co.nz/newbery/Steeleye-Span/Reviews/2004WTDVD.html

Cheers!

David Redmond: January 9th 2006
Steeleye Span has been my favourite folkrock band for thirty years and more.

Great to know you`re still keeping the music alive, Peter.

Joe: January 8th 2006
Wow. I`ve never heard any live recordings from the band`s earliest years. According to the likes of Amazon et al, there are no extras with the reissues, but I trust that the Musikfolk information is reliable. How exciting to have the imminent release of that early archive material to look forward to in the same year that the current Steeleye plans to release a live CD from this year`s tour!

Great shtuff...

Donal; Cork, Ireland: January 7th 2006
Peter, best of luck to you and Steeleye Span for 2006.

Donal

Mr. Reservoir Butler: January 6th 2006
Hey! The info on the Musikfolk website concerning the forthcoming reissues of the early albums looks intriguing, to say the least! Apparently, Please To See The King and Ten Man Mop are both to be re-released as 2-CD packages, with the original album and bonus tracks on the first CD, and BBC Sessions or John Peel Sessions recordings on the second CD. Original album covers, too.

I knew Castle could be relied upon to give us more than just another reissue.

Maurice Walker: January 6th 2006

Here`s to another year of great music-making from Peter and his Steeleye Span colleagues - individually and collectively.

Jerry Farrell: January 6th 2006
(a belated) Happy New Year to Peter Knight, to Steeleye Span, and to all the fans.

Paul Jamieson: December 27th 2005
A Steeleye fan since my teens. Great to be able to catch up with a really good website.
